Strong schools have strong leaders, but President Trump’s recent proposal to cut $9 billion from the U.S. Department of Education, including eliminating the Supporting Effective Instruction State Grants program, a.k.a., Title II, Part A, effectively takes the federal government out of the school leader development business.
In an open letter to Education Secretary DeVos and members of Congress, NYC LeadershipAcademy President & CEO Irma Zardoya calls for maintaining and increasing Washington’s role in supporting school leaders, rather than making the deep cuts President Trump has proposed. Irma writes, “The importance of and need for strong principals is true across the United States. All children deserve great principals to ensure they get the best possible learning opportunities, whether in Missouri, Washington, Tennessee, South Carolina, or Michigan. To make it possible for states to do this work, you must also maintain the federal school leader programs already in place.”
