NYC Leadership Academy Graduate awarded Pete and Carrie Rozelle Award
NYC Leadership Academy is proud to announce that Tyona Washington, Principal of the High School for Excellence and Innovation in Washington Heights, has been awarded the National Center for Learning Disabilities’ (NCLD) 2012 Pete and Carrie Rozelle Award.  Since 2000, the NCLD Pete and Carrie Rozelle Award has honored schools that are successful in addressing the learning and social/emotional needs of students with learning disabilities and those who struggle with learning.

The High School for Excellence and Innovation, opened in 2009, is designed for students who have been held back twice in elementary and middle school.  The school is known for its small class sizes offering individual attention as well as counseling services for students.  Principal Tyona Washington said in an interview with SchoolBook, “At the High School for Excellence and Innovation, we are a ‘family’.  If a student is having a problem, there is an adult who that student can turn to for guidance.”

The High School for Leadership and Excellence will be formally recognized at NCLD’s third annual “Celebrating Our Schools” Luncheon this November, and will receive a cash prize of $2,500, made possible by a grant from the National Football League (NFL).

NYC Leadership Academy is proud that one of our first ever graduates is continuing to achieve positive student outcomes and to incite change in NYC’s public schools.
